“Be more concerned about your character than your reputation. Your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”  Dale Carnegie

Character is who you are when no one is looking. When there is a crossroad between what’s right and wrong, your decisions show your character as well. In today’s world, it is easy to worry too much about our reputation and too little about our character. Building a reputation is largely a popularity venture, but building character requires you to focus on your values, actions and commitments. Now in order to dominate through your character, noble talk and good intentions are not enough.

NUMBER 1: Own Your character

You should be viewed as a charming, confident and sometimes an arrogant man. Also, you should never apologize for who you are. You’ll notice that people recognize this and accepts this fact. You define your realm. You won’t see successful people worrying about what people think of them whether it would be positive or negative — in fact they’ll sometimes use those negative opinions to their advantage.

How can you apply this in your life? Think about the fact that how the world sees you is based on how you see yourself. Meaning? Suppose if you present yourself as a self-doubter, the world will doubt you. Always react from your measured sense of what is right and wrong. So how your mentality should be? To understand this, let’s take an example of a quote –

‘According to me’ is the only ‘according to’ that matters.

What does this quote tell? To dominate the world, you need to be able to make decisions for yourself without it being influenced by the opinions of the rest of the world. If you can’t think for yourself, maybe you’re not cut for this game.

NUMBER 2: Your Appearance Matters

Harvey - Dominate through your character

People respond to how you’re dressed, so like it or not this is what you have to do. Understand that we are still a tribal species — and we respond to social status signals, for better or worse.

Within seconds people make snap judgements about you, as you do them as well. If you seek to display authority, dress that way. If you want to encourage a softer kind of empathy, say, If you’re a therapist, then choose less intimidating clothes. Softer textures. No power suits. Simply decide how you want to be perceived and start taking small steps towards behaving and doing things that are aligned with that image of yourself.

Always remember “The better you dress The worse you can behave”.

NUMBER 3: Self-Belief

Self Belief- Dominate through your character

You should be defining the quality of high belief in yourself — how self-assured and confident you are in your abilities, mental resources, and disposition. These are beliefs honed not in fantasy but in honed skills. Tempered on the battlefield of life. Entrepreneurs fuel their success on the principle of “it’s better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission,” because if we waited for other people to okay our next steps forward, we’d never launch. We’d never grow. We’d never triumph. You’d never dominate through your character. Here’s a quote:

“Ever loved someone so much that you’d do anything for them? Yeah, well make that person yourself and do whatever the hell you want.” – Suits

NUMBER 4: Maintain That Eye Contact

Take example of any highly successful businessman, they are confident enough that they maintains strong eye contact with their clients, colleagues, enemies, and of course attractive women.

So, why is this powerful?

Because as you keep eye contact with another person, it signals many things such as that you’re actually engaged with them, your interest in a person, even how confident you feel. Practice maintaining relaxed, open eye contact with family, friends and new people you meet — they’ll notice a difference. And they will feel — especially in this culture of distraction — that you are genuinely present with them in the moment. Use the 50/70 rule. To maintain appropriate eye contact without staring, you should maintain eye contact for 50 percent of the time while speaking and 70% of the time while listening. This helps to display interest and confidence. Once you establish eye contact, maintain or hold it for 4-5 seconds. After this time passes, you can slowly glance to the side and then go back to establishing eye contact. Ensure that you’ll follow these tips and you will dominate through your character everywhere you go!
